Ashok Mahto Found Guilty on Murder, Escape Charges

Nawada: Mar. 15, 2007

A Nawada court on Thursday held notorious criminal Ashok Mahto guilty of killing seven prison inmates and the jail guard Shashi Bhushan Sharma during his daring escape from the Nawada district jail on December 23, 2001.

Justice Anand Dev Sharma took only ten minutes to deliver his verdict after Mahto was brought to court under heavy security arrangement on Thursday afternoon.

He was then escorted back to Nawada jail under equally tight security setup.

Mahto, with the help of his thugs outside the prison in December 2001, had managed to escape from the prison after gunning down 7 prison inmates and the guard Shashi Bhushan Sharma before jumping on a waiting motorcycle and disappearing.

The police, following Mahto's run for freedom, had shot and killed three of his associates during the high-speed chase that followed but Mahto was able to vanish.

After being on run for nearly five years, Mahto was recaptured from Jharkhand on August 13, 2006.

The court will announce punishment on Friday.
