Protest in Patna against India's Defeat in World Cup
Patna: Mar. 18, 2007
Cricket fans in Patna, a day after organizing 'hawans' and pujas for the success of the Indian team in the ongoing World Cup being played in West Indies, burnt the effigies of the Indian players following the humiliating defeat served by an inexperienced team like Bangladesh on Sunday.
Members of the Patna Cricket Fans Club, unable to hide their emotions in the face of defeat, took out a donkey rally suggesting the pathetic performance of the Indian players who lost to Bangladesh by 5 wickets.
The rally, after covering various streets, arrived at the Kadam Kuan crossing where the angry fans burnt the effigy of the Indian players and 'beat' the players' cutouts with sticks and sandals.
"If the Indians had gone down battling a better team, we would not be so much disappointed or angered, but to lose to a team like Bangladesh, the Indian team has insulted the entire nation," said Sujit Kumar, a protestor.
The protestors also blasted Captain Rahul Dravid for including Virendra Sehwag despite his failure in recent games and criticized Mahendra Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, and fast-fading Sachin Tendulkar for their sub-par performances.
In Ranchi, angry youths destroyed the boundary wall of an under-construction house owned by Dhoni, reports said.
"Indian players are focusing more on getting endorsements and making money by means other than playing cricket. No wonder the team got spanked by a minnow like Bangladesh," protestors said.
