Museum Theft Mastermind Arrested in Nalanda

The Nalanda police, on Sunday, succeeded in apprehending the mastermind of last year's high-profile theft into Patna Museum Umesh Sao from Asha Nagar area in Sohsarai village, Sohsarai police station in-charge S. K. Dubey said.

The police, acting on a tip-off raided Sao's in-law's house in Sohsarai and arrested him without incident, he said.

Sao was handed over to the CBI to determine his fate, it was learnt.

Thieves, on September 26 broke into the second floor of the Patna Museum and stole 18 rare Buddha and Mahavir statues belonging to the Pala era with an estimated value of Rs. 50 crore.

On November 18, 2006, a CBI team in conjunction with Nalanda and Nawada police, recovered 16 of the 18 ancient relics stolen from the Patna Museum following a raid in Barahaita village under Giriak police station in Nalanda district.
The police earlier had arrested four persons in the case.
