Shahabuddin's Men Clash with Rival Gang in Prison; Many Hurt
Siwan: Mar. 20, 2007
At least two dozen inmates were reportedly injured at Siwan jail when a fight broke out between two groups of prisoners, one supporting the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin and the other opposing him.
The jail superintendent and at least half a dozen policemen were also slightly hurt when they intervened to bring the situation under control.
According to the report, the fight broke out when Shahabuddin, the notorious RJD MP who makes Siwan Jail his home for last several years for his involvement in over three dozen criminal cases including murder and abduction, issued a marching order to three new prisoners who had been brought to the jail last Sunday to appear before him.
When the three men in question who were identified as Sanjay Kushwaha, Lahore Manjhi, and Vikas Singh refused to follow Shahabuddin's diktat, the MP, along with several dozens of his supporters went to their cell and threatened to kill them if they refused to follow his orders.
Within minutes, a fight broke out with Shahabuddin's supporters thrashing the three new prisoners.
The security guards then rushed to the battle scene and beat up the prisoners with canes. Several prisoners and policemen, including the jail superintendent L. K. Sinha, were hurt in the riot that lasted nearly half an hour.
Officials said the three men belonged to a rival gang in Siwan that opposed Shahabuddin's gang of criminals.
The police have filed FIRs against the Siwan MP and eleven of his cohorts.
Following the incident, security has been heightened in Siwan Jail, District Magistrate Santosh Kumar Mall said.
