Papiya Ghosh's Neighbor Takes Stand in the Court
Patna: Mar. 20, 2007
Slain Patna University history professor Papiya Ghosh's close friend and neighbor Nita Aditya, on Tuesday, took the stand at the fast track court that is handling the professor and her maid's murder case that created an international outrage demanding justice for the victims' families.
In her deposition, Aditya recounted her harrowing account of finding the lifeless, bloody bodies of Professor Ghosh and her live-in maid Malti Devi.
"Gita, who worked as maid at Papiya's house, came to me on the morning of December 4, and said no one was opening the door despite ringing the bell for a long time. So I went to her house and rung the bell a few times. When there was no response, I pushed the door only to find it was not locked from inside. When I entered the bedroom, I found Papiya covered in a blanket full of blood. I ran outside shrieking. Then other people rushed to see what had happened. I also entered the house again and realized Papiya Ghosh was dead. In the kitchen, I found the dead body of Malti. I also noticed the television set and the music system was missing from their places," Nita Aditya told the court.
The court had also summoned Ram Pravesh, a labor who had been working on whitewashing the house of Prof. Ghosh.
"I had worked all day on whitewashing the building. In the evening I got paid and then I went home. Next morning which was a Sunday, I came to know about the murder of madam and her maid," he told the court.
Besides a number of senior of police officials, the five accused in the case - Shankar Sao, Anil Kumar, Ashish Kumar, Manohar Kumar, and Ramchandra Mahto, the lawyer who is accused of protecting the criminals and storing the stolen items - were also present in the court under heavy security.
