PIL Against Boycotting Legislators
Patna: Mar. 22, 2007
Shruti Singh, a Patna High Court lawyer, on Thursday, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court against the Opposition leaders' decision to boycott the Assembly for a prolonged period of time saying these legislators and councilors are being paid from the taxpayers' money and if they fail to show up in the Assembly for a long period of time, their salaries should not be paid to them.
"These MLAs and MLCs, who are enjoying a rich life with high salaries and attractive perks at the taxpayers' money, go to the state Assembly, show their faces, sign a register, shout some slogans, and return to their homes without doing anything for the people of Bihar. Under these circumstances, it is hoped that they not be paid a single paisa as people of Bihar are being defrauded by such leaders," the petition read.
The move was widely hailed by people in Patna.
"Someone needs to teach these incompetent, greedy politicians a lesson and it is heartening to know that someone is taking some actions in it," said a senior High Court lawyer who wished to remain anonymous.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Opposition, Rabri Devi, ruled out any compromise with the NDA government saying she would not apologize for her party's actions that led to the current impasse between the government and the opposition leaders.
"We are meeting with the Governor on Monday during which we will apprise him of the highhandedness of the NDA government. "We are going to expose them for what they are," the former Chief Minister of Bihar said.
