Papiya Ghosh's Maid Takes the Witness Stand
Patna: Mar. 23, 2007
The prosecution in the high-profile Papiya Ghosh murder case, on Friday, called the maid of the slain Patna University history professor as its fourth witness in the trial being held in the fast court of Justice Om Prakash in Patna.
Geeta Devi, who worked as the maid at Prof. Ghosh's house at the time the dastardly crime was committed during which her employer and her live-in maid Malti Devi were stabbed to death, recounted her account of the morning after the eventful night of December 2 saying when no one answered the door bell at Prof. Ghosh's house, she called the neighbor's wife Anita Devi where she also worked as their maid.
"Anita Devi also buzzed the doorbell but when there was no response, she pushed the door only to find it was not locked from inside. When we entered the house, we found Papiyaji dead in her bedroom. Malti Devi's lifeless body was lying on the kitchen floor. We also noticed the car and the television set missing from the house," the witness told the court,
Ghosh, a noted historian and a professor of Patna University, was found dead in her house on the morning of December 3. Both she and her maid were stabbed to death. Five people, including a lawyer, have been arrested in the case though two persons are yet to be caught, the police say.
Most of the stolen items from the house were later recovered by the police.
