Governor Takes First Step to End Standoff
Patna: Mar. 24, 2007
Governor R. S. Gavai, on Saturday, called up Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the Assembly Speaker Uday Narain Chowdhary as the first step to end the nearly two-week deadlock between the government and the Opposition over censure motion that the government earlier passed against the opposition leaders on the House floor on March 12, sources in the government said.
As reported before, a delegate of the Opposition led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rabri Devi, had met with the Governor last Friday asking his help in ending the government-opposition standoff by putting pressure on the ruling parties to withdraw censure motion against the opposition leaders.
Also, Chowdhary separately met with the Governor last week and gave him a full account of the events in the House that led to the censure motion against certain opposition leaders.
Unconfirmed reports said the opposition was expected to tender its apology on the House floor on either Monday or Wednesday at which time the government would withdraw censure motion to bring an end to the impasse.
Besides disrupting the normal proceeding of the Assembly for nearly two weeks, the current boycott has also prompted a lawsuit against the opposition leaders for abusing their power and disregarding the interests of the people they represent.
