Assembly Impasse Could be Nearing End

Patna: Mar. 25, 2007

Governor R. S. Gavai, in an attempt to bring an end to the 12-day long Assembly deadlock, on Sunday, held talks with a number of opposition leaders hoping to bring them and the government to a bargaining table without putting anyone in an awkward, embarrassing situation.

At the invitation of the Governor, several leaders from the opposition parties met with him and apprised him of their grievance against the Nitish-led NDA government.

Those who participated in the Sunday meeting included Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders Shakeel Ahmed Khan, Shyam Rajak, Ramchandra Purbe, Congress leader Awadhesh Kumar Singh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Ramchandra Singh Yadav, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Nagina Devi, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Abdul Jaleel.

Speaker of the House Uday Narain Chowdhary has called a meeting of the working committee on Monday urging all leaders, including those in the opposition, to attend the gathering.

The opposition leaders have been boycotting Assembly sessions since March 12 after the government passed censure motion against a number of RJD leaders who engaged in crass behavior unbecoming of public representatives while also demeaning the prestige of the House.
