Governor Signs Bihar Police Act
Patna: Mar. 30, 2007
Amidst widespread protest by the left and other opposition parties, Bihar Governor R. S. Gavai, on Friday, gave a go-ahead signal to the new Police Act proposed by the NDA government in an attempt to check incidents of crime and corruption in the state.
With the Governor's signing up of the Act, Bihar becomes the first state in the nation to follow up on an earlier Supreme Court's direction to take such measure to put a brake on crime and other corruption-related incidents.
The new Act goes into effect immediately, officials said.
The government is now working to familiarize all senior police officials in each district with the provisions in the Police Act so as to implement them correctly and without and prejudice or bias, they said.
A meeting of all Superintendents of Police (SPs) and other senior law-enforcement officials has been called on April 4 at the meeting room in Patna Secretariat where they will given an overview of the Act by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar himself, it was learnt.
Meanwhile, the Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah is gearing up to do a PowerPoint presentation on Saturday to explain Bihar's top officials of the key features of the new Police Act.
As reported, the opposition parties led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have vowed to oppose the Police Act saying it gave too much power to the police who would use it to settle political scores.
