Papiya Ghosh's Driver to be Declared a Hostile Witness
Patna: Mar. 30, 2007
Prosecutors in the high-profile Papiya Ghosh murder case on Friday asked the Fast Track court judge Om Prakash to declare the victim's driver Iqbal as a hostile witness for lying under oath while changing his story a number of times.
The request from the prosecution came after the defense asked the judge to not allow the prosecution to re-examine Iqbal who told the court that he had seen a computer and a television in the bedroom where the lifeless body of the Patna University history professor was found on the morning of December 3.
After the defense asked the court not to allow the prosecution to re-interrogate Iqbal, the public prosecutor asked the judge to declare the professor's driver as a hostile witness.
During an earlier police interrogation, Iqbal had said that the computer and the television set were missing at the time the bodies of Professor Ghosh and her live-in maid Malti Devi were discovered on December 3. However, during the cross-examination on Friday, he changed his statement saying he had seen the computer and the TV set were the body of Professor Ghosh was lying.
Next hearing is scheduled for April 2.
