In a major bust of a gang of train robbers, the railway police in Patna on Tuesday raided the house of one Ram Naresh Pandey in Koilwar and recovered several lakh rupees worth of stolen items including jewelries, foreign currency, a pistol, live cartridges, laptop computers, video cameras, cell phones and many other items, Railway SP Ajitabh Kumar.
Acting on a tip-off, a special task force of the railway police raided the house of Pandey in Koilwar and recovered 26 suitcases stolen from passengers in running trains.
The police arrested Pandey, a retired army official, his wife Laxmi, and their nephew Shashikant from their sprawling bungalow for operating a gang of train robbers on Patna-Mokama and Patna-Buxar lines of the East-Central Railways.
The SP, at a press conference at Patna Junction, said the husband-wife duo, dressed nicely and laden with expensive jewelries, would get into the AC compartments of long-distance trains after purchasing valid tickets and just as the passengers would drop their guards, the couple would walk out with their suitcases.
The couple and their nephew were sent to Ara Jail. Later they will be brought to Patna for further interrogation, the police said.
More arrests are expected to be made soon, the SP said.
