The incident occurred under Kotwali police station near Patna Women's College on Boring Road.

As reported, Ajay Kumar Singh, after bidding goodbye to his wife who was going to Dehradun to see their son by Punjab Mail, went to the Chief Minister's bungalow to oversee a construction work. He was returning to his home in Nageshwar Colony to pick up his daughter for school when he was ambushed by some criminals on Boring Road.

The criminals then opened fire at Singh from a very close range. Several bullets pierced the body of the car while at least two bullets hit Singh killing him on the spot.

From the preliminary investigation, it appeared Singh knew those who killed them since the car had come to a complete stop when the criminals opened fire at him, the police said.

Surprisingly, no one has come forward to provide any clue in the crime.

The body of Singh was sent to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for a customary autopsy before being handed over to the grieving family.

Singh's wife Anuradha was going to Dehradun where their 12-year old son attends a private school. His daughter stayed behind because of her school. The train was passing Buxar when someone informed her on her cell phone about the tragedy that had befallen on her.

A distraught Anuradha got off in Jamania station and after catching a taxi in Buxar, she returned to Patna only to see the lifeless, bullet-ridden body of her husband.

Singh's mother, sister, and three nephews were already inconsolable and with the arrival of Anuradha, the atmosphere further became very heavy as family members and neighbors tried to comfort Anuradha and her 8-year old daughter Anushka.

While the cause of Singh's murder is under investigation, sources said Singh had a verbal row with a 'powerful' contractor just a few days ago.

The police is looking at the case from several angles and have formed a special task force to catch the killers, officials said.
