Special Court Convicts Shahabuddin in Abduction Case
Siwan: May 5, 2007
A special court in Siwan on Saturday, two days after the controversial Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin threatened to kill two Siwan jail officials and a key witness in an auto theft case, found him guilty in the 1999 abduction of Chhote Lal, a Siwan businessman.
Justice Gyaneshwar Srivastava convicted the Siwan MP saying the circumstantial evidences against Shahabuddin were overwhelming that clearly established his guilt in the case.
After his abduction in 1999, Chhotey Lal was never seen again and it is widely presumed that he was murdered by the MP and his men and his body cleverly hidden that was never found.
The court will pronounce the sentence on Tuesday, Justice Srivastava said.
In March, the special court convicted Shahabuddin in the 1998 attack on the Communist Party of India (ML) office in Siwan.
He is accused in nearly 40 criminal cases including murders and abductions.
The special court, however, acquitted him in two other charges including in a 1997 assault case and in the 1991 bombing of the DAV College in Siwan.
