Contractor Ajay Singh's Killer Nabbed

Patna: May 11, 2007

A week after the brutal killing of Patna contractor Ajay Kumar Singh, the state police on Thursday announced the arrest of contractor Sanjay Singh, the son of retired ADM B. K. Singh and Dharmshila Singh, from Howrah in West Bengal on charges of killing Ajay Singh due to business rivalry.

Though the arrest came on Tuesday night, the police kept the information secret until today after Sanjay Singh confessed of his crime and provided names and details of his associates who took part in the killing of Ajay Singh.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kundan Krishnan, while talking to media on Thursday, said the police had suspected Sanjay's involvement in the case within a couple of days after the murder was committed.

"During our initial investigation we found out that the victim had filed an FIR against the suspect last December. After learning this fact, we had been monitoring his cell phone calls. Encouraged by the media reports that the police had not found any clue in the case, the suspect continued to become complacent and made too many mistakes that finally did him in," said the SSP.

As reported, Sanjay attended the wedding of the son of another contractor in Pataliputra Colony three days after committing the murder. Then he went to Kolkata to attend the wedding of his brother-in-law.

From Howrah Station, Sanjay called his wife telling her he was at the railway station. Without wasting any more time, the six-member team of police from Bihar jumped into action and arrested Sanjay without any incident, the SSP said.

He was brought to Patna by road the same night.

Business rivalry was the reason why Sanjay killed Ajay Singh, the accused said.

The parents of the accused, shocked at the revelation of their son's involvement in the killing, blamed their fate for giving birth to a son like Sanjay.

"No one in our family has done anything like this. This is a shameful day for us," said Sanjay's father B. K. Singh.

The police, however, says, Sanjay had been to jail over 15 years ago in another murder case.

Sanjay's older brother Manoj Singh is a senior executive in Bokaro Steel Plant while his younger brother works as a software engineer in the United States, the police said.
