Furor in Lok Sabha over Dikshit's Remarks
New Delhi: May 10, 2007
Following the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's anti-Bihar and anti-UP rhetoric on Wednesday, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Thursday as leaders from various parties demanded an unequivocal apology from her for insulting millions of Biharis and UP residents across the nation.
At the Lok Sabha, leaders from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (U), Samajwadi Party, and AIADMK said Dikshit was way over her line in her remarks against Bihar and UP and either she offered an unconditional apology to all she had offended or resign from CM's post.
Protestor chanting anti-Dikshit slogans gathered in the well and refused to allow the House proceeding during the Question Hour. The chaos continued for several hours after which the Speaker of the House Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the house for the rest of the day.
Meanwhile, amidst growing criticism of her comments, Dikshit met with the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to offer her clarification on her comments.
As reported, on Wednesday, while laying the foundation stone of a flyover in New Delhi, Dikshit singled out people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh saying a large number of people from these states come to Delhi and settle down here contributing to traffic and other civic problems.
