Accidental Fire Hurts Home Guard Jawan; Professor Roughed up

Photo by Shashi UttamAn angry mob outside Patna Collectorate on Monday brutally beat up retired Patna University professor Vishwanath Prasad Sinha, age 70, when his licensed revolver accidentally fired hitting a security guard, and injuring him seriously, the police said.

According to the report, Prof. Sinha was as the Collectorate office to get his revolver's license renewed. At the entrance of the office, he handed over the revolver to the Home Guard jawan Harendra Singh in compliance with the security rules.

Singh, upon inspection, found the revolver loaded. He gave it back to Prof. Sinha to empty it before allowing him entry into the ADM office.

Within seconds, a mob caught hold of the professor and beat him black and blue before the police could intervene and take both Singh and Sinha to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where both are listed in critical conditions.

An investigation has been launched to find the circumstances leading to the firing though the entire incident does appear to be accidental, District Magistrate B. Rajendra said.

Prof. Sinha has been arrested and his revolver confiscated.
