Absconding Ex-MLA Runs out of Luck; Arrested
Gaya: May 14, 2007
The Gaya police on Monday arrested Rajendra Yadav, the former legislator and the husband of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Kunti Devi, who had been absconding from the police after escaping from the police custody in Gaya court last December.
Yadav, who faces a host of criminal cases, was found hiding in a field in Horidih.
Gaya Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Kumar Jain said the police had received tips that Yadav had recently been living in Horidih, a village at the outskirts of Rajgir. When a team of police raided the house of one Vijay Kumar Yadav, they arrested Ramjivan Yadav and Ramnandan Yadav but by then Rajendra Yadav had already slipped out of the house.
The police also recovered a double-barrel gun and a mobile phone from the house indicating the former legislator had in fact been there.
During intense grilling, the two men revealed the location of Yadav's hideout after which the police and Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawans found and arrested him from an old barnyard in a field, the police said.
Yadav was brought back to Gaya under tight police security.
It may be recalled that it was at the behest of RJD legislator Kunti Devi that the opposition leaders shut down the Assembly proceedings for over a week last March accusing the Nitish government of acting out of political vendetta and not ordering arrests of six people allegedly responsible for setting her farm house in Atri in Gaya district on fire.
Anil Kumar Sinha, IG, said cases against Yadav would be tried in the Speedy Trial Court and fresh charges could be filed against him after further investigation.
