Mobiles Recovered from Shahbuddin's Jail Cell in Siwan

Patna: May 16, 2007

Following the recovery of a mobile phone and a charger from the prison cell of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP and a convicted criminal Mohammed Shahabuddin on late Tuesday night, the administration has lodged a case against the MP that may earn him an additional year in the prison, officials in Siwan said.

Jail IG Sandeep Paundrik said officials were waiting for a report from Siwan DM after which appropriate actions will be taken against the RJD leader.

As reported, simultaneous raids were conducted at Siwan and Chhapra Jails on late Tuesday night during which 14 mobile phones and chargers were recovered from various cells including the cell of Shahabuddin.

The raids led by sadar SDO P. P. Sharma and DSP Mithilesh Kumar also netted several bottles of liquors, a knife, 18 pornographic CDs, cooking stoves and other banned items.

Paundrik said actions will be taken against all jail officials who are found guilty of allowing such infractions from taking place.

Authorities are also in the process of getting a printout of the calls made by the phone found in Shahabuddin's possession. "This could shed a lot of light on the MP's activities," a Siwan jail official said.

It may be recalled that the Siwan MP was convicted of abducting and killing a CPI-ML activist Chhote Lal back in 1999 and was sentenced to life by a fast track court in Siwan.

He also faces criminal charges in over three dozen cases.
