Patna: May 18, 2007

LJP MLA Nagina Devi. Photo by Shashi UttamA Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) legislator from Bathnaha constituency in Sitamarhi district is in the danger of losing her membership to Bihar Assembly after reports of her being a Nepali citizen surfaced in the political parlor on Friday.

The woman in the eye of the storm is Nagina Devi, a Paswan protégé, who is now scrambling to establish her Indian citizenship saying she is the victim of a malicious rumor started by a Janata Dal (U) leader who she defeated in the last Vidhan Sabha elections that saw the end of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) rule and emergence of NDA power in Bihar.

In a report released by the Union Home Ministry at the behest of Patna High Court, it was revealed that Nagina Devi is in fact a Nepali citizen and never actually changed her citizenship to Indian.

The report will be sent to the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer for appropriate actions, a spokesperson for the Union Home Ministry said.

The case was first brought into Patna High Court's attention by the defeated Janata Dal (U) candidate from Bathnaha constituency Rajkishore Singh Kushwaha who had maintained that Nagina Devi, who is married to an Indian citizen, should not have been allowed to contest the elections because of her Nepali citizenship.

Meaanwhile, the woman in the midst of controversy, in Patna on Friday, said she was not aware of the fact that she had to be an Indian citizen to contest in elections. She also displayed her gun license and some other documents to establish she was an Indian through and through despite the fact that she never became an Indian citizen.
