NHRC Fines Bihar Government for Human Rights Violation
Patna: May 19, 2007
A National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team on Saturday in Patna fined the state government Rs. 7.60 lakh for violating various human rights acts while also ordering it to pay Rs. 14.25 lakh in 10 other cases to various victims of human rights violations.
8 of the 10 cases relate to death of prisoners in various Bihar jail in the absence of proper medical care or protection, officials said.
The Commission has also directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to explain the state's position in 19 other cases in which the victims have claimed to have been denied their basic rights.
This is the first time the NHRC has held a public court in Bihar to deal with several cases of human rights violations.
Leading the team of judges, Justice S. Rajendra Babu, during a press conference at the conclusion of the three-day camp, said that though not in the top of the list, Bihar was still one of the handful of states that had the dubious distinction of having the most number of human rights violations in the country.
The cases were heard in a makeshift court at the Bihar Industries Association building.
