Six Boys Die in Fatuha as Boat Capsizes in Ganga

Patna: May 19, 2007

At least six teenagers were feared dead after a country boat turned over and capsized in Ganga near Phulwaria village in Fatuha in Patna district on Saturday afternoon, officials in Patna said.

As reported, several people from nearby village across the river had come to Phulwaria to attend an event to mark the death of the father of one Vishwanath Mahto.

After the customary 'bhoj', the guests started to return to their village in a boat carrying 15 persons. A sudden storm with wind blowing in excess of 50 kilometers per hour caused the boat to tip over and turn turtle throwing all the passengers in the water.

While nine people were able to swim back to safety, six persons were said to be missing.

Divers were searching the area to recover the missing persons that included Shatrughan Mahto (13), Pankaj Mahto (16), Mitthu Mahto (10), Praveen Mahto (14), Dipu Thakur (17), and Shivnath Mahto (15).
