Seven Patients Reportedly Die during the Doctor's Strike

Patna: May 27, 2007

At least seven persons were believed to have died as a direct result of the strike by the junior doctors of Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) that eventually ended on late Sunday night following much drama involving a cousin of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, and Parveen Amanullah, the wife of Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, officials in Patna said.

As the hospital refused to admit any new patients, the existing patients scrambled to seek medical services at other hospitals and nursing homes in the state capital. Meanwhile, seven patients in the emergency and neurosurgery ward became the silent victims of the strike by the junior doctors who, on numerous occasions, have chosen to put their personal interests before the welfare of the patients.

As reported, the junior doctors, on Saturday, went on a lightning strike after Modi, a cousin of the Deputy CM, and Amanullah visited the emergency ward of the PMCH and reportedly rebuked the doctors for ignoring the interests of the patients.

State Health Minister Chandramohan Rai earlier visited the hospital and tried to placate the striking doctors. Dr. O. P. Chowdhary, the hospital superintendent, later informed that the doctors had withdrawn their strike under certain condition including follow up on an FIR filed against Modi and Amanullah.
