Young, first-timer contestants in the ongoing civic body polls in Bihar have emerged as the biggest winners defeating some very prominent, experienced candidates in the results that were announced for 37 districts on Monday.
Results of 6 municipal corporations for 2,682 positions for which polls were held last Saturday were announced on Monday indicating a major shift in power from the hands of old hoagies to a large number of freshmen shocking many poll pundits who had pretty much given the seats to the known names.
While in Fatuha and Phulwarisharif, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-backed candidates prevailed over other contestants, in Maner mostly new, unknown faces emerged as winners. Similar results were reported from Bakhtiarpur where 18 of the 20 elected candidates are first-timers.
Elections in Patna are scheduled to be held on Tuesday. Altogether 844 candidates are vying for positions in 72 wards as nearly 12 lakh voters will hit 1149 polling booths scattered all over the state capital.
Security has been tightened around the city with shoot-at-sight order in effect throughout the day until the poll closes at 7:00 pm.
Meanwhile, in Danapur, criminals, frustrated at the loss of their candidate, shot and killed the husband of a winning candidate.
The crime took place on Mubarakpur Road when criminals dragged out Jagdish Prasad, the owner of a shoe shop in Danapur and shot him in his head killing him on the spot.
Prasad was the husband of Gayatri Devi, the winner from Ward number 7 in Danapur.
His body was sent for an autopsy as police searches for the killers, Danapur DSP Pramod Kumar Mandal said.
