Lalu's Nephews Get 3 years in Fodder Scam

A Jharkhand court on Thursday convicted 64 people, including two nephews of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the multi-crore rupees fodder scam that hit the state in the late nineties eventually resulting in jail time for Yadav, the then Chief Minister of Bihar, and the coronation of his wife Rabri Devi as the new Chief Minister of the state.
Special CBI judge U. S. P. Sinha in the Ranchi court, while hearing on case number RC66 (a)/96, convicted 82 people in the case related to the illegal withdrawal of Rs. 48.9 crore from Chaibasa Treasury during the Lalu regime in pre-Jharkhand Bihar.
Virendra Yadav and Nagendra Yadav, the nephews of Lalu Prasad Yadav, were given three years of rigorous imprisonment besides a fine of Rs. 1.45 lakh each.
In the event of failure to pay the fine, the two Yadavs will have to spend an extra six months behind the bars, the judge said.
Those who were given jail terms of less than 3 years were released on personal bonds.
While one accused died during the trial period, three turned government witnesses, one is still absconding, and another accused confessed of his crime is already serving his sentence.
