Anant Singh Sent to Prison in Judicial Custody till Nov. 13
Patna: Nov. 1, 2007
Janata Dal (U) legislator Anant Singh with several crimes under his belt during his long reign of terror in Mokama, on Thursday, was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Raghavendra Kumar Singh before being sent to Patna's Beur Jail in judicial custody until November 13.
As reported, Singh and his musclemen roughed up three media reporters on Thursday morning after holding them hostage for a few hours. Two reporters and a cameraman were injured in the assault that left them with serious cuts and bruises including a few broken bones.
Patna DIG Sunil Kumar said an FIR has been lodged against Singh and his men under various non-bailable Acts, including attempted murder, while attempts are on to other perpetrators.
Condemning the attack on the reporters, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he was pleased with the swift action taken by the state police in the assault case. "Law is going to take its course and the law does not discriminate based on one's party affiliation," Kumar said.
Taking a shot at the RJD leadership, the Chief Minister said that several such attacks took place during the previous RJD regime but this is the first time the police has done its job in a swift, professional manner.
"During the RJD rule, an editor of an English daily was attacked brutally. Later, a RJD legislator beat up a reporter of the same daily. In Gaya and Jamshedpur, reporters were murdered and the former Chief Minister Rabri Devi openly engaged in abusive language with a reporter in Gandhi Maidan. In all these cases, not one action was taken against the erring politicians, yet the RJD is trying to give today's incident a political color to gain political grounds in a state where they have been overwhelmingly rejected by the voters," the Chief Minister said.
