In an yet another embarrassing indictment for the state law and order machinery, eight under-trial criminals facing charges ranging from murder, rape, and robbery, among others, escaped from a Madhepura court by digging a hole in the wall of the detainee room on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 4:00 pm soon after the criminals were brought to the court to be produced before a judge.
While being in judicial custody in the detainee room within the court premises, the criminals found their way to freedom by removing loose bricks in the room wall.
Before the police could realize what had just happened, the criminals were long gone.
Raids were being conducted and borders had been sealed to nab the escapees, said Madhepura Superintendent of Police (SP) O. N. Bhaskar.
The fugitives were identified as notorious criminal and murder Punjit Kumar, former SAP jawan Vishwamitra Mirdha, Munna Singh, Sikandar Singh, Guddu Singh, Arvind Yadav, and Arun Marandi, reports said.
