Public Prosecutor Gunned Down in Begusarai
Begusarai: Nov. 8, 2007
Armed criminals in Begusarai on Thursday barged into the house of Ramnaresh Sharma; the Additional Public Prosecutor involved in five cases against Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Member of Parliament Surajbhan, and shot him to death creating a panic in the region.
According to the reports from Begusarai, two armed criminals, at around 5:30 pm, forced their entries into the house of Sharma, 58, in Pokharia area and opened indiscriminate fire at him while 4 or5 of their associates kept an eye outside while keeping the getaway vehicle ready.
Sharma was taken to a local hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
Besides handling a number of cases against the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP from Ballia, Sharma was also spearheading the trial against him in the much-publicized Rami Singh murder case.
Clearly taken aback by the gruesome killing of Sharma, leaders from the Nitish-led NDA coalition in Bihar condemned the incident and ordered capture of his killers without delay.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while directing a high-level probe into the incident and announcing a Rs. 10 lakh ex-gratia payment to the family of Sharma, summoned a high-level meeting of Bihar's top policemen including the Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha while entrusting the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Abhayanand and CID IG Rajesh Ranjan to investigate the case.
Expressing his grief and disgust over the killing of the public prosecutor, Kumar also directed the officials to provide full security to the family members of Sharma.
Janata Dal (U) state president Lallan Singh and party national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari also condemned the crime calling it a 'part of a well-conceived conspiracy by certain politicians' to intimidate other lawyers and witnesses in the cases Sharma was attached with.
