Lawyers Boycott Court; APP's Widow Given a Check of Rs. 10 lakh
Patna: Nov. 15, 2007
Lawyers in Patna on Thursday, under the banner of Bihar State Bar Council, refrained from attending courts in protest against the recent killing of Begusarai Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Ramnaresh Sharma whose killers still remain unidentified and at large despite a high-level CID probe into it.
"While the decision to boycott the court was not an easy one, sometimes it is only necessary to resort to such drastic measures to put pressure on the government," said the Council president and senior lawyer Rajendra Prasad Singh.
The brutal death of Sharma had shocked the entire legal community and it was hoped that the police would diligently perform its duty in bringing the killers to justice, he said.
Patna High Court Advocate Association president Shyam Prasad Mukherjee, while talking to the media, said the lawyers would intensify their stir if Sharma's killers were not caught soon.
Meanwhile, Begusarai District Magistrate Sanjeev Hans on Thursday handed over a check of Rs. 10 lakh to the widow of the APP Madhulata Sharma and said the government was taking steps to promote her son Prabhakar Kumar to occupy the post earlier filled by his father.
"This check is not compensation or a gratuity to the family members of late Mr. Sharma but a token of thanks and gratitude from the state government that recognizes the selfless, hard work done by the APP," said the DM while announcing the administration's decision to provide security to all public prosecutors who were involved in high-profile cases involving politicians or hard core criminals.
