Extreme Backwards Remain that Way: Commission Report

Patna: Nov. 20, 2007

Commission on Extreme Backward Castes submit its report to the CM. Photo by Shashi UttamIn a startling revelation, the Mahadalit Commission, in its report to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday, said that the members of the extreme backward castes like Musahar, Mehtar, and Nat had failed to rise in the society despite various welfare schemes introduced to improve their conditions.

The 186-page report emphasized the need to step up social programs to extricate the members of the extremely backward community without which they could further slip into social and economic abyss making things even worse.

Commission secretary K. P. Ramaiyya said the study did not include Paswan, Pasi, Dhobi, and Chamar but other than those had clearly not benefited from previous social schemes and their condition remained the same making it impossible to find even a high school teacher that belonged to one of those groups.

The Chief Minister said he would take the recommendations of the Commission very seriously and implement them with more zeal than ever before.
