Governor Honors Noted Maithil Personalities

Governor R. S. Gavai, while inaugurating the three-day Vidyapati festival at Vidyapati Bhawan in Patna on Thursday, said he would soon consult with the Bihar government to accord appropriate status to the Maithili language that beautifully expressed the state's rich and varied culture.
"Like other languages of Bihar, Maithili occupied a special place in the history of the state and I will soon hold consultations with the Chief Minister and other Bihar officials to ensure proper status is accorded to this language," the Governor said.
"Vidyapati, like West Bengal's Rabindra Nath Tagore, broke the geographical barriers and earned acclaims in India and abroad for his immense contributions in the field of literature.
Several prominent citizens from the Maithil community including former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra, musician Chandeshwar Jha, painter Krishna Kumar Kashyap, Kavita Devi, Mohan Bhardwaj, Dr. Ramanand Jha Raman, Priya Das, Jagat Narain Chowdhary, and Shyama Jha were honored by the Governor with various awards and the famous Mithila 'Paag', a headgear to symbolize the honors bestowed upon them.
The event, organized under the banner of Maithili Chetna Samiti, also featured songs, dance, and poetries by well-known artists from the Mithila region.
The Governor also released books by Bilat Paswan Vihangam and Tarakant Mishra, and a souvenir booklet by the Maithil Chetna Samiti.
