PU Celebrates 91st Anniversary amidst Students' Protest

Patna University, on Monday, celebrated its 91st anniversary by organizing a meeting at Wheeler Senate Hall where the Vice Chancellor Y. C. Simadri once again urged the Central government to grant Patna University the status of Central University.
Inaugurating the function, Dr. Simadri recounted the glory days of the university and expressed his desire to restore its respect in the field of education by hiring only the most qualified teachers and introducing new courses to reflect the changing face of the world.
The Vice Chancellor also lamented the Central government's reluctance in granting Central University status to Patna University.
"Many new universities have been accorded such status but Patna University, which is the seventh oldest university in the nation, still awaits its turn," said Dr. Simadri.
Others who spoke on the occasion including pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. S. Ehteshamauddin, Registrar Vibhash Kumar Yadav, Patna University Teachers' Association president Dr. U. K. Sinha, and Prof. N. K. Chowdhary.
Outside the Wheeler Senate Hall, however, was a scene of protest and dissent.
Dozens of student activists belonging to various students' organizations chanted unflattering slogans against the Vice Chancellor calling him a dictator while demanding withdrawal of expulsion order against eight students.
