Anand Mohan, Two others Condemned to Death
Patna: Oct. 3, 2007

In a verdict that sent shockwave across the nation, a Patna court presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Ram Krishna Rai on Wednesday awarded death sentences to the former MP and Janata Dal (U) leader Anand Mohan, former Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA from Bikramganj Akhlaq Ahmed, and Arun Kumar, for their roles in the 1994 lynching death of the then District Magistrate (DM) of Gopalganj G. Krishnaiyah.

Anand Mohan's wife and former MP from Vaishali Lovely Anand, JD-U legislator from Lalganj Munna Shukla, Shashi Shekhar and Harendra Kumar were given life imprisonment for their roles in the December 5, 1994 incident when these people, along with Mohan and Ahmed, incited a mob to attack the DM during a protest over the murder of Chhotan Shukla in Muzaffarpur.
As the mob beat the DM to a pulp, Bhutan Shukla, a crony of Anand Shukla, shot the DM from a close range who later died at the hospital.
Earlier this week, the same court had held all seven accused guilty under various Indian Penal Codes including murder, attempted murder, and rioting.
29 of the 36 accused were acquitted in the lack of sufficient evidences against them.
On Tuesday, Uma Krishnaiya, wife of the slain DM who now lives in Hyderabad, in an interview, had hoped for death penalties for all seven accused saying while their deaths would not bring back her husband, at least it would restore her faith in the Indian judiciary.
This is the first time in Indian history, a former MP has been awarded death sentence.
