Lovely Anand Appeals Her Conviction in Patna High Court

Patna: Oct. 5, 2007

Lovely Anand. File photo by Shashi UttamLovely Anand, the former MP and the wife of Anand Mohan, also an ex-MP and now a man convicted to die in the lynching death of Gopalganj District Magistrate G. Krishnaiah, on Friday moved Patna High Court appealing her conviction in the same case in which a lower court judge condemned her to spend her entire life behind the bar.

"My client maintains her utmost innocence and is willing to go all the way to prove that she played no part in the Krishnaih tragedy. We are certain she will be vindicated and prevail in the court of law," Lovely Anand's attorney C. M. Jha said.

Last Wednesday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Ramshreshtra Rai in Patna awarded death sentences to the Janata Dal (U) leader Anand Mohan, former Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA from Bikramganj Akhlaq Ahmed, and Arun Kumar, for their roles in the 1994 lynching death of the then District Magistrate (DM) of Gopalganj G. Krishnaiyah.

The same court also awarded life terms to five others including Vijay Kumar Shukla a.k.a. Munna Shukla, former MLA Akhlaq Ahmed, Harendra Shahi, Shashi Shekhar, and Arun Kumar Sinha.

Meanwhile, prison officials at Patna's Beur Jail confirmed receiving a notice from the court directing them to provide amenities to all seven prisoners available to a divisional inmate.

As reported earlier, minutes after the court announced its judgment last Wednesday, Mohan had asked the judge to 'save him from torture in the prison'. "We are political prisoners and we have not broken any prison law so I think all of us deserve a little convenience that is appropriate for any political prisoner," he had told the judge.
