Cable Theft Leaves VIP Area without Phones for Hours
Patna: Oct. 6, 2007
Telephone cable thieves in Patna hit again on late Friday night, this time targeting the state capital's most VIP area by stealing a pair of 400'-long cable breaking the communication for the Governor and a host of state ministers from the outer world for more than 12 hours.
As reported, thieves dug out cable from the ground just outside the Secretariat's front gate disrupting phone services at the Governor's mansion and a number of ministers and legislators including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, state Assembly chairperson Uday Narain Chowdhary, and several High Court judges' bungalows.
Over 250 phones were said to be affected by the latest cable theft, authorities said.
Patna district Telephone General Manager V. K. Mahendra said phone services were restored by noon and efforts were being made to apprehend the criminals.
This is not the first time telephone cables have been stolen from Patna.
Earlier, thousands of feet of underground wire were stolen from Harding Park and Bir Chand Patel Marg.
Last May, the police in Uttar Pradesh arrested four criminals who had stolen eight drums of telephone cable from Patna.
Later on August 3, the police arrested 12 members of an interstate gang of cable thieves while trying to steal underground BSNL cable using a tractor.
