Home Secretary Denies Vendetta behind Court Rulings
Patna: Oct. 8, 2007
Taking strong exceptions to the opposition leaders' criticism that the NDA government in Bihar was acting out of political vengeance in settling scores by hiding behind fast track courts, Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, on Monday, said the Nitish government did not create these cases out of blue but instead inherited them from the previous governments.
"It is not fair to accuse the current state government when the law is taking its own course without any interference from those in power. With the court determined to conclude cases that had been pending for years, those who are facing trials in a multitude of cases are a scared lot and therefore making all sorts of unsubstantiated statements that have no truth in them," Amanullah said.
The Home Secretary lauded the police and the judiciary for doing their jobs without fear of retribution from the higher ups saying one's power or political affiliation was not going to be a factor in delivering justice to their victims.
Amanullah also denied having commented on Krishnaiah verdict as accused by some of his distracters. "Since the former Gopalganj District Magistrate was my colleague, I respected the verdict of the court but I did not make any comments on it," he said.
Commending the roles of fast track courts, the Home Secretary said between January 2006 and September 2007, 14,875 persons were convicted by the court which is a record in itself.
Out of these, 41 were given death penalty while 3,163 people were given life imprisonment, he said.
As reported, both NDA convener George Fernandes and Lok Janshakti Party president and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, on Sunday, had accused the Nitish government of acting out of political vengeance against his opponents by using speedy trial courts as fronts.
