Tension in Hajipur following Murder of a Teacher
Patna: Oct. 8, 2007
Anger due to the murder of a Hajipur teacher Dev Kumar Rai by unidentified criminals on Sunday evening spilled over on Monday when thousands of local residents blocked the Gandhi Chowk for over three hours taking out their ire on trains while demanding immediate arrest of the killer or killers of the teacher.
Carrying the dead body of Rai, protestors started to gather at the Gandhi Chowk where they blocked the roads leading to Lalganj, Sonepur, Kutchery, and the hospital.
Burning tires and other objects, the protestors also squatted on the railway tracks delaying the Delhi-Darbhanga Sampark Kranti Express for hours.
The situation was finally brought under control after Vaishali District Magistrate Dr. Pratima and Superintendent of Police (SP) Parasnath assured the protestors of speedy arrest of Rai's killers.
Two people have been taken into police custody that may have information about the killers of the teacher, the SP said.
As reported, Rai, who also owned a liquor shop, was sitting outside his store when criminals on motorcycles showered him with bullets and fled. Another person was also hit by the flying bullets and had to be taken to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he is listed in stable conditions.
