Senior Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani, while in Patna on Wednesday to celebrate the party veteran Kailashpati Mishra's 85th birthday, said the UPA government at the Center was at the brink of collapse and a mid-term election was imminent within next six months.
Speaking at the open-air stage of the Bhartiya Nritya Kala Mandir, the former Deputy Prime Minister said based on the current attitude of the UPA constituents, mid-term elections by half way through the next year could not be ruled out despite his earlier assertion that the Congress-led government would be able to complete its first full term.
"In spite of their common goal of keeping the BJP out of power, the ideological differences among those parties are so glaring that it is bound to collapse under its own weight," said Advani.
The BJP leader praised the Nitish-led NDA government in Bihar by saying it was doing everything it had promised during its election campaign and the results were there to see for everyone.
"Law and order has changed dramatically for better, people are roaming around till late night without any fear, and corrupt people are being caught and brought to justice though the government is still a long way from achieving a corruption-free government," Advani said.
Later Advani and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar gifted a shawl to Mishra and paid their respects by seeking blessings from him.
Kumar, meanwhile, in his speech took a direct shot at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav by expressing his doubts over Yadav's reelection in the mid-term polls.
"The UPA government is completely dependent on the mercy of the left parties to which Yadav is literally begging to avoid any mid-term election. If he is so confident of his victory, why he is so afraid of the mid-term polls?" the Chief Minister said.
