Chief Secretary in Medical College Admission Scandal
Patna: Oct. 12, 2007
Bihar Chief Secretary A. K. Chowdhary is finding himself involved in a controversy after his name surfaced on Friday in a medical admission scandal in Bihar involving nomination of four candidates on special quota during his tenure as the state Health Commissioner in 1999 raising a cloud of suspicion on the validity of other such admissions on quota basis in the state.
As reported, Chowdhary, ignoring the ability and educational backgrounds of four candidates, recommended them for admission in a medical college in Bihar.
Incidentally, one of the four candidates happened to be Jyoti Verma, the daughter of tainted IAS officer S. S. Verma, reports said.
The irregularities were reported to Chowdhary by the then Chief Secretary of Bihar V. S. Dubey but he chose to overlook it, it said.
Besides Jyoti Verma, the other three candidates who were admitted in the Gandhi Memorial Medical College and later acquired MBBS degree included Sangita Kumari, Saket Singh, and Sandhya Mishra who never even appeared in that year's joint medical entrance test.
Health Minister Chandramohan Rai, while talking to reporters, said the department was looking into Dubey's allegations and appropriate measures would be taken against all found guilty.
Meanwhile, Chowdhary maintains his innocence saying he did not recall any such incident.
