69 New Bridges in Bihar to Start Functioning from November

Patna: Oct. 19, 2007

In one of the major success stories of the Nitish government, 69 bridges that were designed to maintain road links in various districts in Bihar during the unforgiving flood season will start operating from November this year, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav said on Friday.

The bridges built at the cost of Rs. 25 lakh each for a total cost of over Rs. 60 crore under the Chief Minister Bridge Building scheme are in the final phase of completion and would open for traffic come November, said Yadav at a press conference in Patna.

Under this scheme, 15 bridges have been built in Muzaffarpur district, 8 in Eastern Champaran district, 6 in Vaishali, 5 each in Patna and Araria districts, 4 in Sitamarhi, 3 in Darbhanga, two each in Rohtas, Chhapra, Sheohar, Bhojpur, and Saharsa districts, and one each in Buxar, Gopalganj, Western Champaran, Bhabhua, Aurangabad, Madhepuram, Banka, Sheikhpura, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Katihar, and Supaul.

A majority of these bridges are built on Screw Pile technology, thus the completion of construction works in relatively short period of time, Yadav said.

In an unrelated development, the state government has fired Kolkata-based Tantia Construction Company from two of the projects in Patna.

"Because of their failure to start the project on time, they have been relieved from their responsibilities of building two roads in Patna which include construction work between Kidwaipuri and Buddha Colony, and a road in Kankarbagh, sources said.

Legal actions have not been ruled out against Tantia Construction Company, they said.
