Alcohol-Related Violence Leads to Three Deaths in Patna
Patna: Oct. 22, 2007
While most people in Patna were busy celebrating Durga Puja on Saturday night, irresponsible drinking coupled with sheer idiocy on the part of an illegal liquor vendor and an off-duty cop resulted in the death of three men under Sri Krishna Puri police station.
As reported, the 50-year old Home Guard jawan Mithilesh Kumar, in an inebriated condition, was only joking when he shoved an egg in the shirt of Bindeshwar Rai who allegedly runs an illicit liquor shop in the Shivpuri area.
Rai, upset by the prank, then beat up the Home Guard jawan, who returned a little later with his goons to get even with Rai.
Not finding Rai at his shop, they caught hold of his brother Virendra Rai and beat him up until he died.
Enraged by his brother's murder, Bindeshwar Rai, with his own gang of musclemen, went to Mithilesh's house where they found his brother Kamlesh who then became the victim of their rage and died due to severe beating by batons and iron rods, the police said.
Seething with rage with his brother's killing, Mithilesh and his men then grab hold of a Home Guard jawan Ravindra Singh and mercilessly beat him up as well sending him to a hospital where he died of his injuries on Monday, City Superintendent of Police (SP) Anwar Hussain said.
Mithilesh Kumar, who is said to be the official driver of BMP 14 IG Ashok Kumar Seth, was arrested on Sunday, the police said.
Meanwhile, unofficial reports said Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha has announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh for the family of the slain police officer Ravindra Singh though that could not be confirmed.
