Hundreds of thousands of people in Patna on Vijay Dashmi on Sunday gathered at the Gandhi Maidan to witness the 'slaying' of Ravan and his monster brothers Meghnad and Kumbhakaran to symbolize the victory of good over evil while also signaling the end of 10-day of Dussehra festival.
The Ram chariot surrounded by the legendary 'Vaanar Sena' left the Naga Baba Thakurbari at around dusk and after covering several streets, arrived at the Gandhi Maidan where the crowd welcomed it with large applause and chants of 'Jai Shri Ram'.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, officially inaugurated the event by paying their respect to Lord Ram and his brother Bharat, played by local artists, by offering flowers and other items.
Soon, the chariot carrying Ram and Lakshman circled the gargantuan effigies of Ravan and his evil brothers and showered it with arrows igniting the explosives in it. With Lord Hanuman 'freeing Sita' from the clutch of Ravan and setting the entire 'Lanka' on fire, the entire structure crumbled to the ground to the ear-splitting applause of the audience.
The show was followed up by a mesmerizing firework show performed by pyro experts from Saharanpur.
