Senior Engineer Arrested on Corruption Charges
Patna: Oct. 24, 2007
Continuing their relentless campaign against corrupt bureaucrats in Bihar, the Vigilance Bureau officials in Patna on Wednesday nabbed yet another government employee, this time a senior engineer in the state Bridge Construction Corporation, as he accepted a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from a contractor.
Vinay Kumar Singh, senior engineer, was taking a bribe from a contractor at his office in Yarpur when the Vigilance sleuths sprung into action and arrested him.
The police, during a raid of his apartment in Rajapur area, discovered cash and assets totaling over Rs. 1 crore, Vigilance Additional Director General Neelmani said.
With documents indicating Singh's investment in the stock market in excess of Rs. 50 lakh, several properties, and over a dozen bank pass books, Singh would be facing a number of charges including that of corruption and amassing wealth well over his known sources of income, Neelmani said.
As reported, actions against Singh took place after a private contractor Harendra Singh informed the Vigilance of Singh's demand of Rs. 50,000 in lieu of rights to build bridges in Chhapra district.
Singh, who already had received Rs. 30,000 in bribe money, was demanding for an extra Rs. 20,000 when the contractor tipped off the Vigilance Bureau, authorities said.
