Massive Reshuffle in State Police Department

Patna: Oct. 26, 2007

The state government, in a sweeping change in the state's law and order administrative structure on Friday, promoted to Additional Director General (ADG)-level IPS officers to the rank of Director General (DG) while also promoting seven IG-level officers to the rank of ADG.

The government announcement that came late Friday evening created a shockwave that took many officials by surprise, particularly those who received the order of transfers, a sign usually indicating less-than-stellar performance at one place for much too long.

Three IGs and five DIGs were among those who received the transfer orders while others who were promoted were given some new additional responsibilities, sources at the Home Ministry said.

Among those who were promoted and given new roles in managing the law and order situation in Bihar are Anand Shankar, ADG, Bihar Police Building Construction, who has been promoted to the post of DG of the Police Building Construction and Commissioner of the para-military Reserve, and Manoj Nath who was elevated to the post of DG/Commissioner of the para-military reserve.

IG (Headquarters) Anil Sinha is now the ADG (Law and Order) while IG A. K. Gupta (Weaker Section, Crime Research Branch) has been entrusted to handle the same departments in the capacity of ADG.

Besides these, dozens of other officials in Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Tirhut have also been shuffled in what the government describes as a move to 'tone-up' the entire police system.
