Road Accident Kills 10, Injures Over a Dozen

Patna: Oct. 29, 2007

At least ten people were confirmed dead when a van carrying over 30 people on Monday turned over near Begusarai on National Highway 31 while trying to avoid an ongoing traffic. More than a dozen and a half people in the van were also seriously hurt, many in critical conditions.

As reported, the vehicle capable of carrying 14 persons was taking 30 people from Patna to Khagaria to offer prayers at Katyayani Temple.

The driver of the vehicle, after trying to pass another vehicle, tried to avoid an oncoming truck and in the process lost control and collided with railway sleepers on the side meant for repair works.

The mangled body of the truck crushed everyone inside with nine people dying on the spot while another dying at a Begusarai hospital.

The impact was so severe that the head of the driver was completely severed from its body, officials said.

18 people were taken to various hospitals in Begusarai where many remain in critical conditions.
