Chaos after Traffic Accident involving RJD Leader's Son-in-Law

Patna: Sept. 1, 2007

An angry crowd in Patna on Saturday, upset at the police's reluctance in filing an FIR against the son-in-law of Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Ramai Ram whose vehicle hit a bicycle rider, blocked the R-Block crossing and attacked the police station demanding actions against the offending driver and erring policemen.

As reported, the son-in-law of Ramai Ram was coming to Patna from Muzaffarpur on his Jeep when his vehicle hit a biker near R-Block hurling him several feet in the air while totaling his bike.

As a crowd gathered ready to deliver mob justice, traffic police intervened and took the driver of the vehicle to the police station. However, reports suggested the police showed extreme reluctance in lodging an FIR against the offending driver once it learnt about his identity and his relationship to the RJD leader.

This further enraged the mob which blocked the R-Block crossing and pelted stones on the police station. When the media reporters tried to cover the incident at the police station, a police official attacked one of the photographers who fell down on the ground damaging his camera.

Only after the intervention of senior police officials including the Traffic Superintendent of Police (SP) P. K. Srivastava, an FIR was lodged against Ram's son-in-law and the accident victim, who was identified as the daily wage earner Mohammed Naimullah, sent to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for treatment.

People accused the police of showing favor to Ramai Ram's son-in-law and demanded suspension of police station clerk Mohammed Sayeed for trying to suppress the case and refusing to file an FIR.
