Patna: Sept. 2, 2007
The state government, at a meeting organized at the Bihar Soochna Bhawan on Sunday, handed over a report to the visiting Finance Minister apprising him of the development works undertaken by the Nitish government and details of the losses caused by this year's devastating flood in Bihar asking the Center of a federal aid of Rs. 8,000 crore for various schemes and rehabilitation of the flood victims.
P. Chidambaram, the Union Finance Minister, after the 75-minute long meeting with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, state Planning Commission vice president N. K. Singh and other top Bihar officials, said he would soon summon a high-level meeting at the Center where he would present Bihar's case for further consideration.
Following the meeting, Singh said Chidambaram was sympathetic to Bihar needs and so was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as mentioned by the Finance Minister, who believes Bihar was the prime candidate for central aid without which it would be extremely difficult for the state to come out of its current morass.
"Bihar must be a part of the overall national growth if India wishes to attain an annual growth rate of 9 percent," Chidambaram said.
