Bihar Engineers Not Backing out of Strike Decision
Patna: Sept. 4, 2007
Bihar Water Resources Minister Ramashray Prasad Singh, on Tuesday, appealed to Bihar engineers to reconsider their decision to go on a striking from Wednesday saying the government was open to talks with their representatives and was willing to lend a sympathetic ear to their demands.
"The engineers have done a great job in the flood-affected regions and we recognize that and thank them for their great work but the fact that Bihar is still reeling under the impact of flood, it would be highly unfortunate if they went ahead with their strike plan leaving millions of people in the state fending for themselves," Singh said at a press conference in Patna.
Engineers under the banner of Bihar Engineering Services Association (BESA) have threatened to go on strike from September 5 if the government did not withdraw the suspension of two engineers who were earlier removed from the duties for not performing to the District Magistrate's satisfaction in the flood-hit areas.
Talking to the media reporters, BESA general secretary Rajeshwar Mishra blamed the bureaucrats for acting 'in an unconstitutional manner' while putting the lives of many engineers in danger.
"Until actions are taken against the erring IAS officials and our other demands are met, there is no question of us backing out from our decision to go on an indefinite strike," a determined Mishra said.
