Patna: Sept. 9, 2007

The state government on Sunday, after much brainstorming and debate, appointed Anjani Kumar Singh, Secretary Art, Culture and Tourism department as the new Principal Secretary of the Human Resources and Development department to fill in the void created by the sudden death of Madan Mohan Jha last Friday, sources in Patna said.

With the Chief Minister's stamp of approval, Singh is all set to become the next chief secretary despite the bar set very high by Jha.

Singh who is leaving for a week-long trip to Japan on Monday will assume his new role immediately upon his return, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Human Resources and Development department has organized a day of mourning in honor of Jha's death.

The meeting will begin at 9:15 am and will be attended by Education Minister Brishan Patel and a host of department staff who will also observe a two-minute silence in respect of the departed soul.

Singh, known for his no-nonsense approach, earlier earned high accolades from top bureaucrats for doing an outstanding job as the project director of the Bihar Education Project.
