Reaction to Blood Causes Karpoori Thakur's Brother's Death
Patna: Sept. 12, 2007
Ramswarth Thakur, the brother of former Chief Minister of Bihar Karpoori Thakur, shortly after receiving blood at the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Wednesday, died of reactions caused by the blood while leaving a number of unanswered questions about the quality of the blood and the care available at the hospital.
As reported, Thakur, who broke a bone in his thigh last Monday, was brought to the PMCH under the care of orthopedic and department head Dr. Arjun Singh where tests revealed low hemoglobin count in his body.
He was given blood obtained from the hospital blood bank following which his condition suddenly worsened with a sharp drop in his blood pressure.
Thakur was rushed to the Surgical ICU and then to the Medical ICU but despite all efforts by the doctors, he died at around 5:00 pm.
Earlier in the morning, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had visited Thakur at the hospital and had instructed the doctors and other officials to ensure he got the best care there. His sudden death, however, shocked everyone, including Kumar, who expressed his condolence to the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, a team of doctors comprising Dr. Devendra Prasad, joint director of the Bihar State AIDS Control Committee, and Dr. Anand Kishore of Model Blood Bank probed the quality of the blood and gave a clean chit to the hospital saying the blood was tested before being administered on Thakur and all standard protocols were maintained in obtaining it from the hospital blood bank.
